Villarreal have splashed out €6million (£4million) on Real Madrid goalkeeper Diego Lopez as they begin their summer rebuilding in impressive fashion.

The Yellow Submarine have made the highly-rated shot stopper one of the most expensive players to come from los Merengues' youth ranks.

Despite the rumours that Jerzy Dudek will join Madrid, the new league champions had no plans to sell the 25-year-old, but were unable to resist the huge offer.

The move has come as a shock to the player too and he must return to the Spanish capital to organise his move to his new club.

Villarreal targeted a new keeper even though Sebastian Viera was impressive between the sticks last term.

Lopez joined Madrid from his hometown club of Lugo in 1999 and was promoted from the C team to RM Castilla in 2003.

After making 33 appearances for the second string, he was moved up to become Iker Casillas' full-time understudy two seasons ago.

That move has meant that Lopez has spent considerable time on the bench and only appeared in the Copa del Rey and one UEFA Champions League game last season.

Looks like Dudek may go to Madrid after all.
