Should we take rooney to the world cup?
Posted: Sun Apr 30, 2006 11:02 pmMy inital thoughts were that if there is a possibility he could play in the knockout stages we should definitely take him. If we can't get to the second round without him, then we don't deserve to win the World Cup, and once it gets down to the knockout stages, his skill is likely to make the difference whether or not we beat teams like Brazil, Portugal, Argentina, Spain etc.
But I can't think of any top players who have been taken to the World Cup where the coach has gambled on them being fit enough to play in the latter stages, where they have actually made any difference to the team. Anybody have any examples where this gamble has actually paid off?
