Roberto Carlos has questioned whether Michael Owen will be able to claim a starting berth at Real Madrid.

The Brazilian appears to have had a change of heart over Owen's arrival at Real after declaring earlier in the week that the England striker would prove a huge success at El Santiago Bernabeu.

The Brazilian has now raised doubts over whether Owen will feature regularly for Los Merengues, especially following the return to the club of Fernando Morientes.

"The question is will Owen be able to play in the team because Morientes has returned," stated the former Internazionale star.

Indeed, Carlos went on to intimate that he believed Owen's signing was unnecessary and that the club should have focused their efforts on landing a defensive midfielder and not another forward.

"I thought that the team was making an effort to land a midfielder, which we need, because our attack is very good," he continued.

"Anyway, if the club considers that the arrival of Owen is beneficial then it is welcome, although I have to ask myself: Will he play? When will he play?"

I think they were excited by the good deal offered by Liverpool (8M). Maybe they wouldn't capture him if he came with the 'normal' price.

Being cynical here, but maybe with RB's track record against Real, they wanted to take out what they perceive as being a threat to them.

Owen was sitting on a contract offer from the club for 1 year... Benitez saved the club's blushes from a disastorous Bosman ???  Owen's agents also approached Real... let not forget ???

I'm glad it's all over. Owen was going stale in the league and for England. It sempt that no matter how bad he played he would still get picked. It's either going to go one of two ways. Either he'll rot on the bench and move again in two years time or he'll sit on the bench get totally pi**ed off and sort his game out and become the Owen of old.

For Englands sake, i hope it's tha latter.

Well, I think other than Beck, no one is happy about Owen's arrival at Real. But the reality is Owen will not play as much there as he would here with LFC. I really think sitting at the bench would help Owen elevate his game.:p

...As I said in another thread .. there is no dishonour in leaving... the dishonour is in the way you leave and in this case what was instigated by Owen's representatives to fashion a move to Real ... was dishourable.. END

Spot on Zara. What would happen if Madrid had gone " Sorry Mr Owen, but your sh*t, we dont need you nor want you"

What would happen then. He'd of signed a new contract and told us all how he turned down a move to Madrid because he loved Anfield and us fans Sooooooooooo much.

Sorry, getting synical in my old age.

No .. that's right ... and so is the fact that he wanted 100,000k per wk from us but went to Real for 56,000 per week... way of the pace of Zedane and co.

Basically he held us to ransom while his cronies did his bidding with Real :O

This is all over now but it's important to know the facts... isn't it  :)
