it`s a lot of money for a 29 year old but if he helps them win the title twice in the next 3 or 4 years he`s practically paid for himself.
for all the talk of formations and philosophies it`s goals that win games and that lad certainly knows where the net is, didnt he recently score something like 65 goals in 60 games over a calender year or something? in english football to have a strike rate of 1 goal every 2 games is phenominal but to score at more than a goal a game over a calender year is f***king incredible, it wasnt even like he was playing for the best team in the league either.
the arsenal fans must be fuming though, over the last 20 years united have been their main rivals and for their best player and captain to jump ship to united must be a real kick in the teeth, i`ve been talking in other threads about how we cant afford to sell our best players because it sends out the wrong signals to the footballing world, well van persie going to united is a huge blow to arsenals prestege and standing as a club.

van persie isn't going to make them any better against the likes of arsenal, chelsea and city or against the very best in the champions league. they'll still struggle to control games against the very best.

this is the perfect short term solution for ferguson. he doesn't care about the long term anymore. all he cares about is his own legacy.

Yep, I agree with that, he's just wanting to say "we've won more trophies then you" try and catch us if you can....

I don't know why, but I just feel RvP has made a mistake going to Mwanck Utd

they've just more than tripled welbeck's wages to 75k a week and he's hardly going to get a look in.

i agree with you that selling your best player and captain isn't generally considered as a good sign. but then again, the team that van persie is going to went through a period of offloading their best, or at least most significant, players for a while and going from strength to strength. stamm, van nistelrooy and beckham were all shown the door and the club kept going forward and attracting more big names.

as far as arsenal are concerned, they've offloaded one player, albeit their talisman, who is approaching 30 and has a history of injury troubles, and have brought in cazorla, podolski and giroud. arguably they are a stronger side than last season now.

Arsenal have been a selling club for years now, Wenger has destroyed them with his resistance to the transfer market and the signing of unknowns who rarely live up to expectation.

They consistently lose their biggest players because they have no ambition, they play safe every year.

Ashley Cole
Thierry Henry
William Gallas
Kolo Toure
Jens Lehmann
Samir Nasri
Cesc Febregas
Robin Van Persie

It won't be long before Wallcott goes.

The best part for me is my in-laws are Arsenal fans, they named their cat 'Persie'. They have a constant reminder everyday!

I feel for Arsenal supporters, they pay some of the highest ticket prices in the country and they are served up disappointing trophyless seasons every single year. Anyone who was scaringmongering (including myself) about the state of our club needs to take a long hard look at Arsenal, because they could be about to lose their best midfielder in Alex Song who is heavily linked with Barcelona for a miserly fee of just £12m.

Wenger and the Arsenal board apart from Usmanov seem happy just to make profit every season in favour of bringing in trophies to the club which is what all top players want to achieve in their careers, they want the multi-millionaire lifestyle, but they also want trophies, they want to be remembered in the decades after they have hung up their boots which is why each season there seems to be an exodus of top talent at Arsenal. They've gone from being an ambitious club who wanted to win things to a club that are journeymen and who are more than happy just to make a profit and the supporters of that club deserve better.

Arsenal have strenghtened both City and United in the past year to the detriment of themselves, Van Persie leaving is akin to us selling Gerrard to Chelsea, selling Agger to City (fingers crossed this doesn't happen).

How the mighty have fallen at the Emirates. It won't surprise me if Sagna and Walcott were the next players to head for the exit door and it's all because of a lack of ambition to win trophies.

The press are saying its the transfer of the summer but I am not convinced RVP has been injury prone and yes he had a fantastic season last year but I would say that was the exception not the norm, i don't reckon he will get the same service at utd and he was sh!te at the Euros

united moved those players on in different circumstances though, those players went because ferguson wanted them gone, they never left for another club because they felt united lacked ambition.
ferguson hit the roof with stam when he claimed in his book that ferguson had tapped him up, beckham had been on a collision course with ferguson over his celebrity lifestyle for a while and van nistelrooy was past his best and apparently had a massive falling out with christiano ronaldo. none of them wanted to go, they were shown the door by ferguson (as was the likes of paul ince too). mind you back then man united were regularly breaking the transfer record and could easily replace players because everyone wanted to play for them.
it was a totally different scenario to arsenal though who as others have pointed out have seen quality players like cole, toure, fabregas, nasri and now van persie leave against the wishes of the club.

RVP follows Fabregas and Nasri out the door, amongst others, and still Arsenal have won no trophies in seven seasons. This is definitely a salutary lesson for us in light of all the speculation about how our own owners intend to manage the club. Wenger is one of the best in the business at unearthing hidden talent, but even he can't build a side that's capable of winning major trophies without significantly more investment in the squad. It doesn't have to involve matching the spending levels of say City or Chelsea because we know that there are plenty of top class players who don't cost the earth, and Wenger is plenty capable of recruiting them. But often those are younger players who require nurturing so it does mean, from time to time, purchasing players who can come straight in and address key problem areas and invariably they cost more. Wenger, though, seems to have developed a penchant over the past five or six years for persisting with youth and refusing to spend big on fees and wages even when top players are available, and that as much as as anything explains why they're in the position they're in. We need to make sure that we don't make the same mistake.

Wenger does spend money though. Podolski, Giroud and Cazorla have cost Arsenal around £40m. Wenger spent £48m last season albeit he was forced to because Fabregas and Nasri left for pastures new, but if you wind the clock back he's spent plenty of money. He spent £15m on Nasri, £17m on Arshavin, Hleb £11m, Reyes cost around £16m, Wiltord £13m. So he has spent money, however increasingly with Wenger he seems to be making the wrong signings.

Did he really need to invest £40m on three attacking players when Arsenal's major problems are in defence? This is a team that conceded 8 goals against United, and conceded 35 goals in their last 33 games with Arsenal scoring 5 own goals. If Vermaelen gets injured then they're in major trouble. Still if they fall by the roadside this season along with Spurs, it makes it easier for us to try and clinch 4th. Hopefully Spurs lose Modric and then it's happy days.

The fact is he sells more than he buys.

There a transfer table I posted a while back that shows that in the last up to 2010, Arsenal made a net profit of £5M in the transfer market.

In contrast, they were only joined by West Ham and Blackburn. EVERY other team made a loss, or should really be termed as an investment.

arsenal have been on the decline ever since david dein left. the extent to which they now just let players contracts run down is frightening. walcott only has a year left aswell.

There's a very good chance both Wallcott and Song will leave by this time next year, even in this window.

Song i think will definetely leave. He is wanted by Barcelona and Arsenal players have no loyalty.

Today Wenger named his new Captain in Vermarlean and Vice captain Arteta. Song has been an Arsenal player for years and you would have thought he would have atleast been named vice captain expecially his position he plays on the pitch.

Wenger also has made comments saying they have lots of great midfielders and wont rule it out. As soon as you make those comments its pretty much done and dusted

Walcott im not too sure about He still hasnt signed a new contract and if he hasnt by 31-08 then i expect him to leave on that date.
