Clubs consider quota system - Discussions begin over limit on homegrow

Liverpool chief executive Rick Parry has revealed that the 20 Premier League clubs have held talks about the introduction of a quota system.

The number of foreign players in English football has been a divisive issue for some time, although there are already restrictions in place for all clubs involved in the UEFA Champions League and the Uefa Cup.

They are obliged to have eight 'homegrown' players - of any nationality, but who have spent three years under the age of 21 at the club - in their 25-man squads.

All Premier League clubs are now considering a quota for a minimum number of homegrown players in their squads in a bid to stave off attempts to impose spending controls.

Parry said: "It was discussed at the Premier League last week after being put up by the Premier League board.

"We have not accepted a figure, just the principle that some minimum limit of homegrown players makes sense.

"For those of us in the Champions League we could introduce it now and it wouldn't be an issue. Indeed the Premier League did produce an analysis which showed that actually a lot of the clubs would not have too much difficult complying.

"It will certainly be given more consideration, it's a way off being decided but it was certainly a constructive discussion."

as some on here no this has been a bit of a thing with me for sometime,
I would like to see only 4 non British born players in a team.
They the report reads is that they are going to use this just to up the price of English players and thats a shame.

Rafa knew this was going to happen 2 years ago and thats why our youth team is full of non British players, they will full under the homegrown thing, I dont like the idea that we are only one player geting hurt away from having NO English players play a game for us.

How would you all feel if there was a rule were in the Prem you had to field 4 British born players in each game.
This would sure be a big boots to get to find good British youth players.

Wow, Lakes, only 4?  That's a brave shout.  Just as a thought experiment, which four would you keep from the following list if your idea were to take effect tomorrow?

Torres
Kuyt
Ngog
Babel
Benayoun
Riera
Alonso
Mascherano
Lucas
Aurelio
Dossena
Insua
Agger
Skrtel
Hyypia
Arbeloa
Degen
Reina
Cavalieri

Ironically when in Spain there was the 3 foreigners limit, the national football was under minimums, and little talent emerged. Where as when we have a lot of foreign players (and most importantly) our players are going somewhere else, we have the best generation of footballers.

I don't think quotas will bring talent, but things well done at an early age. If the work done is not appropiate, it won't matter the quota.

the top few club in England are getting lazy and cheap, they can save money by buying non English youths that have spent years at other club, English football needs a shake up.

Think this is dodgy dangerous ground for the premier league at the moment .

The reason why there is so much money going around and the premier league us the best and most watched in the world is because the best footballers in the world want to come and play ere for the big teams - it has made us into a force in europe . They start putting on caps then big players may well start to move to spain or italy instead and the league will become less attractive and a vicicous circle will start . and yes prices for english lads will shout though the roof where you will prob find players like carlton cole going for the same price as torres .a change prob does need to be done but they have to be careful .

You cant mate , Only having 4 non british will never work now and the clubs would never go for it - for one thing the chances of us ever winning a cl would go forever .

you are right but on the other side to that it will make English clubs work harder on the youth players.

Liverpool would always go to Southend to look at their young kids, this year they only asked to come and see players that had made it into the first team.

yes they could work harder on youth players but what if those youth players just arent good enough ? What if the talent in the UK just isnt good enough to succed . the level of the prem would drop right down .

yep that might be your view about what might happen to the prem, yet i know a few that will have the football on the tv when its not any of the top 4 clubs as they find the football boring, they say seeing two lower teams play is better as they have more guts and a feel for the game of football, in someways they are right, when i go to see Southend play sometimes what you dont see is a player going down every 2 sec as someone breathed on him, ok the skill might not be there but passion is there, sometimes that is missing.

yes an odd few people will think that but the rest of the world turn into the prem mate - and they do it to see the best players in the world play - if those players are playing elsewhere do you think the rest of the world would tune in ? not at all .

might mean we dont have to pay so much for Sky Sports then lol

No i do understand what you are saying but the rest of the worl will always tune in to see the English football, they did so before we had all the non English players.

dont forget you only have got to go back to arounf 1992 when there was still a limit..............Hmm is there a link there, Limit of none British players taken off and from the we dont win the Prem?  Could Be!!
