Premier League ratifies more subs

Premier League clubs will be allowed to name seven substitutes in matches from the start of next season.

The change was suggested by leading clubs such as Manchester United last year and replicates the regulations in European and international games.

The Premier League agreed to discuss the issue, amid concerns that it would favour clubs with big squads.

Premier League voting rules require 14 out of the 20 member clubs to back any suggested rule changes.

Coaches are currently restricted to naming five substitutes, and are able to use a maximum of three of them.

Definitely suits a club like ours - my guess would be that we'd generally have a keeper, 2 defenders, a central mid and potentially 3 attacking players. There's always at least one glaring omission on the teamsheet at the moment, and this will make that less of a problem.

Could be a help in bringing younger players through as well. If, say, we're 3-0 up in a game, someone like Hobbs, El-Zhar or Nemeth could get some valuable time on the pitch. I actually wonder if the change will mean less players will end up shipped out on loan next season.

Its a great idea, it would give youngsters a chance to make bench and develop.

Great idea for big clubs not so good for the smaller ones, as all it does is emphasises the difference in quality of squads. Might help to keep fringe players a little happier and make them feel more a part of the team.

7 seems like a lot, but I am fine with the change it really helps us out. I think it should be 5 plus allowing an emergency goalkeeper.  NFL has a similar rule with the emergency 3rd quarterback, where he can dress and play and not count against the 53 man roster but can only play in the 4th quarter

Agreed.

And thus I like the rule, as it will be good for a big club like LFC, whilst it won't be good for small teams like, say, Everton  :D

I always find five one too few on footy management games and seven one too many.
