Former Uruguay striker Dario Silva has had his right leg amputated following a serious car crash, according to El Pais newspaper.

The 33-year-old ex-Malaga man, who played for Portsmouth last season, was driving his car in Montevideo on Sunday but lost control and hit a column of street lights. He was placed in a medically-induced coma.

Doctor Mario Canela, of La Espanola hospital, explained the surgery was "to amputate the leg from the knee down".

He added: "Silva's situation is absolutely not solved with the amputation. We are worried about a possible infection."

Silva played 49 matches for Uruguay, scoring 15 goals, including the 2002 World Cup finals in the Far East.

He was without a club, having left Pompey in February.

good luck lad, its a shame when someones career is taken away by an accident no matter what career it may be

Does anyone remember the volley he scored in Japan in the '02 World Cup? he caught it on the full and hit it sweet as a nut from about 25 yards, can't recall who it was against but definitely one of the goals of the tournament, it's tragic what's happened but they can't take that away from him, bad luck Dario, hope things work out ok.....

It is a shame. It is very sad. Although he was near the end of his career anyway, he will have to live without one leg :(

Although the things that they can do these days...... I just hope it is not infected otherwise it will cause real problems for him.

Hope things work out ok

That goal you speak of was actually Dario Rodriguez.

But anyway, thats' not important. I always liked Dario Silva actually and it's terrible to see something like this happen to him.

Best of luck to the lad.

He was a quality player, he singlehandedly maintained Malaga on a good level several years. He was a cheater, and a bit dirty sometimes but a great player.

Very sad news.
