Liverpool Football Club miss out on Bulgarian star     12/11/2004

Valeri Bojinov’s agent has denied reports that the striker will be signing a contract with the Reds in January.

The 18-year-old currently plays for Lecce in Serie A and is one of the hottest properties in Italian football with interest from Spain and fellow Serie A teams as well as Liverpool.

Reports suggested a swoop by Rafael Benitez in the transfer window but Bojinov’s agent said: “It’s too late sort out any deal.”

Became the youngest foreign player ever to play in Serie A at the age of fifteen in January 2002, coming off the bench for Lecce against Brescia. Only four players have ever played at a younger age in Serie A. He joined Lecce at thirteen from Maltese side Pieta Hotspurs. He scored thirty-seven goals for the youth team in his first season. He was eligible for Italy but decided to play for Bulgaria.
