Morientes fixed on Anfield switch Dec 21 2004

By Chris Bascombe, Liverpool Echo

LIVERPOOL'S hopes of signing Fernando Morientes grew today as the striker pleaded with Real Madrid to let him leave with dignity rather than block his potential move to Anfield with unrealistic demands.

The Reds remain locked in talks with Real, having made an official bid of £3.5m for the 28-year-old striker.

And confidence in landing the target man is increasing due to Morientes' determination to move to Merseyside.

But if Real stand firm on their excessive valuation of the hitman - double Liverpool's offer - Rafa Benitez will turn his sights elsewhere.

Liverpool believe the player's wishes are now the key to a successful outcome.

Morientes won't hand in a formal transfer request, but he's made it known to his club he's excited by the prospect of joining Liverpool and he hopes his long service at the Bernabeu will be rewarded with a quick resolution to negotiations.

Some sources in Madrid say Real want £10m from Liverpool, plus first option on any future transfer of Steven Gerrard.

There's no chance of the Reds agreeing to such ridiculous demands, but Liverpool hope an eventual fee of around £5m could

finally seal the deal for a player with only 18 months left on his current contract.

Morientes is disturbed by Real's stance so far.

"Madrid must sort out the situation by being sensible," said Morientes. "I would like this to be resolved with maturity. I like Liverpool and I have told Madrid I want it to happen."

If Madrid continue to overprice their wantaway striker, Benitez will turn his attention back to other targets, including Nicolas Anelka.

Anelka is available for £6m from Manchester City and is a viable alternative if the Morientes talks break down.

I'm going to pin this for a day or two as its the most popular Morientes thread.

Can people try their best to somehow keep Morientes talk confined to this thread so as to minimize topic duplication?  :)

Surely we have more than 10 million to spend ???
We will get Morientes for 5 million and Anelka costs 6 mill, we should at least have 15 to 20 mill to spend.
Getting them 2 will be cost 11 mill.
Roberto Carlos wants away in the transfers how much would he cost? probably 10 -15 mill I should imagine.

if we get morientes for the 5-6m that is being quoted, that puts to rest the argument that english players are ridiculously overpriced. clubs are willing to pay more than that for james beattie.  :)

Some have a soft spot for Rooney. I clearly said that despite Rooney's talent and skill, he is not worth 30 million and that his price tag is so high mainly because he's English talent.

Look at this way. Had Xabi Alonso been an Englishman his price tag would be more than 10 million.

I agree AB that there is a certain inflationary element to domestic players, not just in England, but also in Italy. There is a prestiege to having an English star in your team, and the media also tend to hype domestic players more (especially when they play for England) than Johnny Foreigner.

An even better example would be Alonso and Scott Parker. Two young midfielders, both cost around 10million.

Spot the difference Mr. Abramavich and Mr. Ranieri.  :;):
