VAR Discussion

My main question with VAR is that, who triggers the review? Is it the 4th official?

The technology is so accurate that some of the decisions for off side are getting ridiculous. We are talking about milimeters. I'm not talking about our match. There was ome match, i cant remember where a goal was ruled offside by milimeters which in a traditional refereeing would never have been caught.

When decisions are made on such accuracy, it becomes open to abuse.

At the end of the day, if you're offside you're offside even if it's a toe. The problem I have is in the PL we seem to have different rules for VAR. In the PL VAR is only used to view a decision by the ref, ie goal, penalty. If the ref waves away a penalty claim it doesnt get reviewed, look at the handball in the Arsenal/Villa game. In the PL the ref doesnt review a penalty claim/decision on a pitch side monitor as they do everywhere else. Also cant say have seen VAR overturn a refs penalty decision and some on the VAR aren't qualified referees.

If we had VAR last year and it was implemented well we would have been Champions, City had more luck on dodgy decisions than we did. If we had it for the last 20 years then ManUre would probably have 5 titles less.

Its still swings and roundabouts if you ask me. We benefitted against Chelsea with the offside but lost out against Napoli with that pen decision and also against Newcastle when Matip should have been awarded one.

I really don't agree with VAR interfering in every decision as it should be down to the referee but each manager should be given an option to request the referee to consult it.

Think it's horrible personally, not only does it ruin the atmosphere but it doesn't even get the decisions right, it's seems like a lottery sometimes. The Napoli penalty decisions and no penalty for Matip against Newcastle (as mentioned by the poster above me) are prime examples.

The offside call against Spurs the other day was a joke, the player was no more than mere millimeters offside. Thought that forward players get the benefit of the doubt when it comes to offsides? Also thought that the offside call against Chelsea was stupid as well, despite the fact that we benefited from it. They didn't call an offside when we scored against Southampton in a very similar situation.

We've mostly benefited from VAR thus far, but we've just been lucky in the lottery, it's going to bite us as well, someday.

Not sure giving managers VAR calls would be useful, a manager is on the half way line on one side of the pitch - he's no idea if it was offside or a penalty from his position.

Apparently, the offical statement says that Firmino's armpit was offside, hence the call. I'm not sure if they're serious or it's some British joke that I don't understand.

They've made a complete fuckery with VAR, and the sooner they scrap it the better.

You know what my theory is? When VAR was first introduced during the World Cup in Russia it was overturning refereeing decisions left right and centre, in fact the sight of a ref jogging over to the sidelines to review his original decision was one of the enduring images of that tournament. It was happening constantly.
When the top refs met after the WC to review the new technology I think they got together and said this thing is making a cvnt of us, although originally designed as a refereeing aid it's actually making us look incompetent.
I think they got together and decided to only overturn glaring errors, any close calls I think their default position is to back up their mate.
A lot of refs around the world make a decent living from the game, I think the refereeing bosses were worried that VAR could erode trust in refs and lessen their role in the game.
That's my little theory anyway.

Var is just used wrong. it's there to protect refs no matter what.
It can't be used in any way to show how incompetent a ref can be at times and only when the ref has to.
His decision will only be overturned if it's blatantly obvious.
Have to protect those poor egos...

It is becoming a joke, Firmino should never have been judged offside and if the linesman hadn't flagged VAR wouldn't have overruled him. Incidentally the city player who crossed for their winner was offside

You are all correct. Refs are obviously too proud to admit they make mistakes and their colleagues in the VAR room instead of fixing those mistakes they try to convince everyone that the ref was right after all. I mean, I've no idea how they even get away with it. I can understand if nothing is done about some more subjective situations, but with offsides it's pretty straight forward, and when they get it wrong while using VAR, I can't understand how they're not sanctioned.

Klopp had a point when he said that when managers make mistakes, they get sacked. He didn't continue because he's probably not allowed, but he made his point, what happens to referees when they make a mistake? They've always made mistakes, but with VAR now they really have no excuse.

There was another strange VAR related incident earlier in the Everton game, Andre Gomes suffered a horror injury and the ref sent Son off, it was never a sending off in a million years, it was just a freak footballing incident.
To be fair to the ref he only seen the incident once, he obviously just saw the state of Gomes's leg and thought someone has got to walk for this which is a natural reaction but wtf were the VAR crew doing in Stockley Park? They must have seen that Son's tackle was innocuous? If it's not going to overturn glaring errors why bother having it?

Agree he shouldn't have been sent off for it. Awful injury for the lad anyway and hopefully he makes a full recovery from it.

Var is a farce and slowly killing the game. That offside on Firmino yesterday was just pure cheating and nothing else. It was clear from the replays on telly that he was onside so how the Var fool got it wrong is beyond me.

That "VAR fool" was Atkinson.

There is nothing wrong with VAR, it's the insidious f**kers like Atkinson that have nowhere to hide now with inept displays of officiating.

And I don't need to give you three guesses to know who was behind the ridiculous sending off of Son............

He needs to be removed from all top flight games immediately.

It's not VAR. It's way it's been implemented in the PL and also the quality of the refereeing in this country. I remember seeing some stats on referees across the big 5 leagues and our refs were ranked last. Our refs barely get a look in for the knockout stages of the CL. VAR is not perfect but it works much better in other countries because of the way they have implemented it and the quality of the referees.
