If it were up to Klopp who got a contract then Gini would have got what he wanted a long time ago. Its not up to him though and i'd say the meeting was more or less to find out where his head is at. Edwards knew they were meeting up and if they had an improved offer they would have given it then and we would be reading about that instead of him hoping productive talks will lead to an offer of a contract extension.

I can remember the same stuff being wrote that Emre Can could still sign a deal heading into his final year and look how that turned out.

All those players that left on a free seemed to want to stay until they left for free. I felt shafted by Can when he left as that was always his intention no matter what he said about renewing. He wants to stay then he should take the offer we give him, he doesnt take the offer then sell him now before he can make a pre contract for next year. It may be more about him wanting a more offensive role in which case we cannot compete with Koeman.

I get how players wish to make as much as they can, but I also get that the club should protect itself.

That's true, "positive talks" might just mean he's staying for one more season and then he's leaving on a free next season. I guess we'll see what happens in the coming days.

Gini a no go for Barcelona

Barcelona ’s hopes of signing Liverpool midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum have taken a blow after the Spanish club were hit with a ban by La Liga.

Barca manager Ronald Koeman is keen to sign his fellow Dutchman, but La Liga bosses have enforced strict regulations on all top-flight Spanish teams, allowing them only to spend on transfers and staff based on their financials over the past five years.

According to the Mirror, the club has been deeply hit by the coronavirus pandemic, but are carrying a £510 million annual wage bill and will need to offload players before they can even consider making a move for Wijnaldum.

I am a fan but should  we sell Gini in January due to his limitations? He is 30. Creates very little, minimal assists and virtually no goals. Now I am the first to admit that it is not simply down to Gini as his goalscoring record and assists at international level are very different. Against teams that park the bus he offers very little simply because his defensive capabilities aren’t required and Klopp obviously wants him to do a specific job. Just look what happened against Barca when he was given a lot more freedom. I’m slightly on the fence with this one. What do you guys think?

I'd keep him we need his experience in the middle. We've got crocks that rarely play so at least we can rely on an experienced head in midfield.

Hendo 30, Milner 34. Thiago 29, Gini 30, Bobby, Mane, Mo etc... we have to start renewing somewhere....

I think he's as good as gone.

If he wanted to stay then he would have signed a contract in the summer. No way he would wait until now.

If he goes to Barca, it'll be with my blessing. He was one of the first players Klopp brought in and he's been a good servant.

I have no problem with him honouring his deal and trying his luck in Spain. He always gives 100% and I don't see that changing if he signs a contract elsewhere.

Gini is as Good as gone.. We could be smart and use him and Salah in a swap deal and get Mbappe in ASAP.

Then any money we've saved up for Mbappe spend on a CB.. And let's go and win another title.

Obviously dreaming.. But still

Yep, as part of the team who won our first League title in 30 years and was 11mm away from winning another, not to mention winning the CL (and appearing in another final) Gini will forever be remembered as a legend at this club.
Footballing careers don’t go on forever though and I think it’s a good time for the club and player to part ways,
He did the shirt proud.

As with Can leaving,, it's cost the club 20 million in missed transfer revenue. Good servant, quiet, efficient, Mr Dependable.

Good luck to him but he's going away at the worst possible time for us. We'll definitely miss him.
