Gini was obviously looking to bolster his retirement fund and in these crazy days I don't blame him one little bit for that. What I find annoying is that we paid £25m for Thiago simply because Bayern Munich weren't prepared to let him go on a free. We have an appalling record of allowing top players to run their contracts right down and be sold for next to nothing or go on a free transfer. Gini now becomes the latest victim. Why do we let this happen? What am I missing? Surely a footballers contract doesn't allow this level of power and if it does it is a nonsense. There should be a clause allowing a club to sell a player unconditionally if said player constantly refuses to sign a new contract within 12 months of the contract expiring. The current player contractual conditions seem to be totally in favour of the player.
