Gini was obviously looking to bolster his retirement fund and in these crazy days I don't blame him one little bit for that. What I find annoying is that we paid £25m for Thiago simply because Bayern Munich weren't prepared to let him go on a free. We have an appalling record of allowing top players to run their contracts right down and be sold for next to nothing or go on a free transfer. Gini now becomes the latest victim. Why do we let this happen? What am I missing? Surely a footballers contract doesn't allow this level of power and if it does it is a nonsense. There should be a clause allowing a club to sell a player unconditionally if said player constantly refuses to sign a new contract within 12 months of the contract expiring. The current player contractual conditions seem to be totally in favour of the player.

Appalling record ? Gini and Can in recent years and before that the only one I can remember is McManaman - not exactly an appalling record of top players going for free

Sturridge, Moreno, Clyne, Lallana and Enrique to name a few that left on a free transfer in the last 5 years.

So no top players then as was suggested.

Every club has players that run out of contract.

Gini is prob the first top player since McManaman were we prob wanted the player to stay

I think you have to count Can as he was getting plenty of game time for us when fit and we wanted to keep him. On Gini, we got great value out of him over the 5 years and in all honesty he wouldn't have had a significant resale value anyway. We were much better off keeping him for the season. Don't begrudge him going for a massive payday at PSG.

I think if all was healthy our midfield would have been Hendo Fabinho and Thiago, not sure Gini would have started as much as he has this season, he probably knows that too. I think he should have scored and created more than he did, his greatest asset is his durability, I’m sure we can do better than a player whose best asset is his durability.

If we do buy Tielemans, it would be interesting to see how much game time Hendo gets.

Owen as well, yes we got £11m for him or something but he was worth far, far more that that at the time, indeed he was one of the hottest properties in world football. He went for such a low fee because his contract was running down. I have some sympathy for the club though because the player kept saying he was going to sign a new contract but there was always some excuse like his agent was on holiday or one of his horses ate the contract before he could sign it or something equally as plausible.
The club was clearly bullshitted by the player, by the time they realised what was going on it was too late.

I remember Ericsson telling him to go to Real to improve his game, he did not play much at Madrid and Sven dropped him from the England team, that was about the time I stopped supporting England as a team.

Kazza I also remember that Owen was sold  to Newcastle for £17m one year after he joined Real Madrid. They made a reasonable profit considering Owen’s very lacklustre overall performance.

Sterling is my main reason for struggling to get behind England. Can’t abide the overpaid ..........

England are absolutely packed to the gunwales with players who play for our rivals, I’m with you, I’m going to find it very difficult if not practically impossible to suddenly get behind the likes of Pickford, McGuire, Walker, Calvert-Lewin and all the other United, City, Chelsea, Everton etc players. Even the likes of Kane and Sancho look set to start next season as City and United players.
That’s without mentioning their awful fans as well who have a long history of booing Liverpool players like Roger Hunt, John Barnes and Joe Gomez. Personally speaking i’m hoping England don’t even make it out of the group.

Well it depends what you would class as a top player doesnt it
I dont rate them as top players but the club did when they signed them and especially with the likes of Sturridge when they gave him a whopper contract after a year.

It isnt about top players either as it's about players leaving here for no fees when they should have been sold so the club can reinvest the money back into the team.

Spin it whatever way you want but its money lost on assets that shouldn't have been allowed to devalue to the point that it was zero.

If you owned a business you wouldnt leave stock to expire because its fooking stupid and costing you money and more when you have to replace it.

It happens at every club - you can’t force players to leave

It’s also an area where we have managed to pick up some great players

Milner , Matip and going back further to the likes of Bellamy , Maxi

You name me one team that never has a player go out of contract

No you cant force a player to leave but you can transfer list them and accept the bid that's offered rather than refuse it because it doesnt match the valuation they want and will never get.

Yes it works both ways and we have signed bosman's who have turned out to be ok but again what comes in is far less than what goes out which is the point.

I never said we are the only club that let's this happen either so why dont you show me a club that has let more players go than us. Not youth players either.
