Liverpool chairman issues warning to Brendan Rodgers, 'strong improvement' expected at Anfield

Liverpool expect a "strong improvement" this season from last year's disappointing campaign, according to chairman Tom Werner.
The Reds have brought in big-money signings like Roberto Firmino and Christian Benteke this summer in a bid to make sure they at least get back into the Champions League.
Brendan Rodgers' position as manager came under scrutiny last term as the Anfield club could only finish sixth, but Warner said the club owners Fenway Sports Group retained belief in the 42-year-old.
"We do believe Brendan is the right man for Liverpool and the right man to take the club forward," Werner said in an interview with the Liverpool Echo.
"When we hired Brendan we wanted to see improvement.
"Hopefully when we have a conversation in a year's time he will have demonstrated and the squad will have demonstrated that we've regained top form again."
FSG backed Rodgers in the transfer market this summer and Werner added: "We had some very constructive discussions with Brendan. We learned a lot and we are very much looking forward to the start of the season because we're a stronger team now than we were a year ago.
"Brendan was very instrumental in the transfer targets that we went after this summer. We expect we're going to see a strong improvement."

As little as I like Brendan, it does seem a little odd for the chairman to suddenly pile the pressure on him at this particular moment. I reckon they had enough reasons to sack him already and since they didn't, why not leave him to it? There's enough pressure on him and players both old and new as it is.

Quite agree RedAnt, seems an odd way to encourage the manager.
I've decided not to watch any BR interviews this season tos ave myself needless stress.

BR's interviews are about the only thing I enjoy about him, though it's the same kinda enjoyment I got from sticking a 9v battery on my tongue when I was a kid.

I'd pay little attention to Tom Werner and what he says
Its just his usual spiel at this time of year to coincide with the start of the league.

Is he actually saying that he sacrificed going to watch his son in the play-offs to go home and put his head in his hands and think about he'd let down millions of people? Top bloke, that.

Its not a message to B-Rod, but a message to the supporters that they wont tolerate another season like the last one. I'm sure B-Rod have been told this a long time before he told the media about it.

True, but the fans don't need the message either. We already know it. To me it puts pressure on the new signings to get performing quickly. I also think it could effect the rest of the players who are hopefully still embarrassed by our last game vs Stoke. Are we even favourites for tomorrow? I doubt it. Still, by making the statement now it would make it easier to sack him since the new year. It just makes no sense that they'd continue to pave the way to sack him when they so easily could have already.

BR leaving by mutual consent means less compo! Rather than sacking him... It's all about money at the end of the day.

B-Rod is drinking in the last chance saloon and last orders has already been called. The owners are simply explaining why they have stuck with him and what theiur expectations are. He was under pressure as soon as he became LFC manager.
It goes with the territory...

I have chosen to write all my negative thoughts in this thread as no doubt over the course of the season BR will hit a few walls.
IF LFC demonstrate today that we are prepared to adopt a new type of football. IF LFC in particular Mingolet display a simple approach to the game,
i.e. clearing the ball and not playing suicide footie in our own 18 yard box. IF we show we can do the basics well, then BR has a chance.
IF BR shows no halt to his desire to see LFC play in a style more accustomed to Barcelona,
THEN HE & HIS POSITION AS LFC MANAGER IS A TIME BOMB TICKING!

He looked a smarmy git again tonight in his mega expensive white shirt. He needs to learn some modesty. Would have thought that was a big lesson from last season so surprised to he him dressed like a ***** porn star again today.
