The problem is his buying over the past two seasons. Yes we had a minor injury crisis which has been blown up out of all proportion by some, but the reserves brought in cost £3m or £4m each and should be doing better than they have so far

the reserve team we fielded last night cost 27m quid. and none of them have just come back from injury either. that tells you enough about the standard of players like biscan, diao etc.

If you take Dudek, Carragher, Hyypia, Henchoz, Finnan, Kewell, Gerrard, Hamann, Murphy, Owen and Baros as the best XI, the reserves would probably be :
Kirkland £6m
Riise £4.6m
Traore £500k
Biscan £5.5m
Otsemobor N/A
Cheyrou £3m
Diao £4m
Welsh N/A
Smicer £4.2m
Heskey £11m
Diouf £10m
I estimate about £40m and what kind of team is it?!?!?!?! Houllier spent the money on it and complains about injuries when most if not all of that XI was available

I wonder how much chelsea reserves are?
I think much of this season has been down to trying to play a more attacking game with the wrong players i.e defensive ones!
Or players out of position!
I hope that in future squad players are more likely to come through the academy rather the the french divisions!

Probably a lot more but they're certainly better and Chelski are 2nd and not 30 odd points behind Arsenal They also happen to be (losing) in the CL SF which we're not

And how many of Chelski reserves would walk straight into the Liverpool starting XI?

if you look at the start of the season the midfield was kewell, gerrard, smicer, diouf. now that's very attacking. and for a while it worked and we were playing some good attacking football.
then as soon as hamann was fit, he walked straight back in the team, kewell and smicer both got injured for a while, and we ended up chopping and changing every week.
we don't have the BALANCE right in midfield, that is the problem.

look at manure's midfield in the treble season. giggs, keane, scholes and beckham was the best midfield in europe. you had giggs who was the dribbler, scholes the goalscorer, keane the general and beckham the deliverer.
kewell is our giggs and gerrard is our keane. we need a player who can arrive late in the box and score goals from a central area and a quality right winger with good delivery.
simple really
