Liverpool have signed French left-back Chris Mavinga from Paris St Germain while forward Nabil El Zhar has penned a contract extension.

Mavinga, 18, can also play in the centre of defence and has represented his country at under-18 level.

El Zhar, 22, is the latest Reds player to sign a new deal and he has committed himself to the Anfield club until 2012.

The Moroccan international joined Liverpool from Saint Etienne in October 2006 and made 19 appearances for the first team last season.

His only goal for the club came in a 2-1 Carling Cup victory over Cardiff in 2007.

I guess this is because of aurelio?

I think it may have been slightly influenced by Aurelio but I think it was more influenced by Hypia's departure so we have that extra centre back if we need him.

Just a young boy so I think the chances of him being any kind of the centre centre half cover which was mentioned earlier are probably zero. That said, I've never heard of him nor seen him play so he may well be a reasonable prospect for his age. We'll no doubt see over the next few seasons whether he's upto it or not. Time as always will tell. I suppose the law of averages says one of these young kids must come off at some point though, so I wish him well.

Best leave it at that, the last thing I want to be is a usual supect displaying lunatic tendencies.

He may turn out great or maybe we wont here of him again much!

Yep, in fairness whether or not the French are known for their defenders shouldn't impact on this lads career. Blanc was good, as is Thuram and Evra so they have produced the odd good one.

Obviously my gripe should I have one is that we could just as easily signed some bloke from Tranmere, but as I can't actually think of any right now, I'll keep an open mind.

He is considered to be one of the top talents in france. I have never seen him play but hopefully he will develop into a good player.

All the players are sigining extensions thru to 2012..... could be interesting, no?

My crystal balls tell me Rafa will resign on 31st December 2011.

Dessaily , gallas , abidal , sagna , evra ? They've produced good center backs over the course of the years .

By the way this mavinga lad is 170 cm rather short for a center back, and if were going to sign someone from psg , i would have hoped it would be mamadou sakho , he's a big lad and very highly rated all around the world , this would have been a good chance to snap him from psg as a replacement for hypia , he's only 19 as well and can play left back
