LIVERPOOL VS WIGAN ATHLETIC - Match thread

We have to get a better result than last season's corresponding fixture (1-1). I was looking at last season's results, we went on long-ish unbeaten runs separated by too many poor runs

2007/8 (all competitions, in order)

11 games unbeaten
1 win in 4 games
8 games unbeaten
1 win in 4 games (3 defeats)
9 games unbeaten
1 win in 4 games
7 games unbeaten
Lost away to Man Utd
8 games unbeaten
Lost in extra time to Chelsea in the European Cup
2 wins in a row

Best winning runs under Rafa (by season)

2008/9 : 4 in a row (current) : Crewe, Bitters, PSV, Citeh
2007/8 : 7 in a row : Inter, Boro, Bolton, West Ham, Newcastle, Inter, Reading
2006/7 : 5 in a row : Reading, villa, Bordeaux, Reading, Brum
2005/6 : 11 in a row : Fulham, Newcastle, Brum, Bitters, WBA, Bolton, Blackburn, Chelsea, West Ham, villa, Pompey
2004/5 : 3 in a row (three times) : Newcastle, WBA, Southampton / Watford, Charlton, Fulham / Bitters, Bolton, Juventus

That could be a lot better, it is winning runs that make champions/title challenges, unbeaten runs tend to be clogged up with draws.

unbeaten runs mean nothing as proved last year when we didn't lose until december in the league. you're better off winning one and losing one than drawing two.

i presume keane will come back into the side and i wouldn't be surprised to see benayoun get a runout either.

2-0

Too many Draws killed us last season . Wigan are no pushovers , hopefully we go into this game with the right mentality as we are usually poor after internationals .Hope Keane and torres bring their scoring boots , as we need to make up the goal difference , would like a 3-0 but would equally be pleased with a 1-0 win as well .

They are not as poor a side as stoke and i thought we leart our lesson from being complacent in that game?

neither are man u but we should've knocked a few past them.

Got  to play to win with a good margin though.

It'll be tough as Wigan look a strong unit this season with plenty of threat in attack as well.

However I woulod expect us to win on home turf. 3-1 with 2 goals from Stevie G and one from Agger on his 1st team come back :)

Solid as Wigan might be, I still expect them to park the bus.

I'd like to see a confident start converted into a goal or twos cushion for once. Be nice not to have to go behind before we start playing!

We should have but we did that not , why because our finishing is cra.p , stoke was a further evident of that . Torres , gerrard and keane are our only main source of goals and if they bring their scoring boots than yes we will stuff them .

TBH mate I think if you are going to expect that kind of scoreline in this game you're gonna be disappointed. It's been a regular tactic of Bruce to come and park the team bus in the goal mouth and I don't expect anything different come saturday.
We may have the luxury of not having to face Zaki as last I heard he was doubtful for saturday, but they have got plenty of other decent players that can cause us trouble. It's always as good as guaranteed that a returning goalie has a blinder against us and assuming Kirkland doesn't try lifting too many cups of tea between now and saturday that he will play and be up for the game.

Having said that though I do see us getting three points out of this game but only by the odd goal in three.

Like Rushie has said Bruce is no stranger to taking points of us, he done it with Birmingham and with Wigan picked up a point last year. Despite there reasonably good start they will definately come and put everyone behind the ball.
Its going to be something that we have to get used to at home - lets just hope we can either get an early goal, or if we dont not panic.
Before the international break we have been on a good run and started to look like we are finding some form (barring the first half at eastlands)
The team almost picks itself nowadays which is a good thing.
I would sit Masher out and play 4-4-2 as Alonso and Gerrard are more creative, added to the fact the travelling he (masher) has been putting in this week he may not be ready anyway.
We should win this but take nothing for granted we drew loads of games like this last season and already have against Stoke.
Riera could be a key player stretching them i think.
