It's 10 years since Gerard Houllier took over the riegns at Anfield, I'm just wondering what would everyone's best 11 and bench be, from the last 10 years. Transfers only, no inherited players i.e. Gerrard/Carra/Fowler/Owen/Murphy/Berger. Also with Mascheranho not signed up as of yet, he can't count, neither can Anelka or any other loan signing.

Just to see which manager, in our eyes, has made the better transfers, and so LFC2007 can have a field day after me saying it's pointless comparing managers  :D

Here's mine

GK-Reina (Benitez)
RB-Babbel (Houllier)
CB-Agger (Benitez)
CB-Hyypia (Houllier)
LB-Riise (Houllier)
RM-Pennant (Benitez)
CM-Hamman (Houllier)
CM-Alonso (Benitez)
LM-Babel (Benitez)
FW-Torres (Benitez)
FW-Crouch (Benitez)

bench: Kirkland (GH) Henchoz (GH) McAllister (GH) Lucas (RB) Baros (GH)

Overall I've got 8 each, which hasn't made me any clearer. But with 7 of Benitez' 8 starting, it looks like he's got the better record.

I would probably put in Litmanen instead of Crouch.

-------------------------Reina

            Babbel       Hyypia       Henchoz    Riise

Babel ?      McAllister       Hamman     Kewell - How sad is that?

                            Torres     Litmanen

subs: Agger, Alonso , Yossi, Crouch, Westerveld.

My toughest choice was Agger, I do rate him highly and he is a much better ball player than Henchoz was. But Henchoz IMO was an underated defender, and he had a very good and consistent partnership for years with Hyypia, so thats why he just notches it for me.

The other tough one was Alonso and Mcallister, considering I had already put arguably one of the best defensive midfielders we've ever had in our time I thought putting Alonso in there would be too negative, just as the Mascha Alonso one is too negative for me. You only need one holding mid, and Hamman and Mascha are both better than Alonso. So to compliment Hamman I thought McAllister would be ideal, both were knocking on a bit and would of tired more, but McAllister was class and an inspiration to others around him.

Still both flanks were then and even more now a concern, so I've opted d\for Babel and Kewell, a sorry state of affairs considering we've had a decade to pick from and I cant think of much better.

Torres Litmanen = Pure class.  :nod

Berger was signed in 97 by Roy Evans, he made his debut against Leicester, trust me he was inherited for Houllier.

I owe an apology, he wasn't signed in 97 it was 96 and his debut was against Southampton, but he did score twice against Leicester, that's for certain.

Reina     (GK)   - Rafa's best signing

Babbel    (RB)   - Has to be the bargain of the decade

Henchoz (CB)   - Was an able deputy for Hyppia

Hyypia    (CB)    - Houllier's best signing

Riise       (LB)   - Put him here as there was no one better

Smicer    (RM)  - I like our midfielders to chip in with their share
of goals. Should be able to create them to.
So i am picking smicer here.
Hamman  (DM) -  My fav player in the last 10 years...houllier's
                        2nd  best signing.

Alonso     (CM) -  Still think if alonso was playing further up pitch
he can cause all kind of damage. Not sure why rafa  persists in playing him so deep.

Kewell     (LW) -  My 2nd fav player in the last 10 years...Still is
our best LW

Torres     (F) - No comments needed

Baros      (F) - I know i know....many of you guys don't rate him.
But i did...he is very direct..takes on defenders...creates space for his strike partner and also chips in with his fair share..

Subs
1)Dudek
2)Finnan
3)Agger
4)Skertel
5)Insua
6)Pennant
7)Garcia
8)McAllister
9)Cisse
10)Litmanen
11)This is toss up between heskey, kuyt, voronin, meijer, morientes, babel, bellamy, - i am picking bellamy...we really shouldn't have let him go.

Sadly the last ten years hasn't been as good as the previous twenty so to pick a team that was trying to emulate the past would be churlish.

The only players who might get in a team of the last thirty years would be Gerrard, Carra & Reina. The rest sadly dont get close. Torres can be counted only in another three years.
