Bit strange to buy an army of youngsters when only a couple of them will probably get a chance

We have to scout out young talent in europe because our own academy is not producing the goods at the moment.

Not all of them are going to make it through, but the hope is that we develop a few quality players who can fit into the first team. They will get a chance in the cups, and if they are good enough they will get a chance in the league.

Agger seemed to do alright... He's still a youngster...

Agger is young, but we're talking of more 16,17,18 year olds who we have brought in from Spain, Argentina, Paraguay, Holland, Sweden, Denmark and now Hungary who are part of the youth team.

i.e. The likes of Roque, Brouwer, Duran, Huth, Insua, Antwi, El zhar, Ajdarevic, Hansen, Idrizaj etc.

It's a good policy. Signing younger players. Building them for the future. Along with our all-conquering youth team.

I was under the impression that Brouwer was a really hot prospect but not heard much of an impact since he's joined up? Anyone seen that lad play? Is he any good?

we have been bulding for the future for years now with not many young players breaking through, its all just camouflage, lets get the players signed who will go straight into the first team, we have waited long enough, lets not wait any longer

I think that's a little short sighted Peewee, Rafa has only recently had the option to focus part of his efforts at the club in bringing in some talented youngsters.

The youth team must be a source for players, it is essential, granted that there have not been many in recent years but give Rafa a chance to get it right.

Of course we have to sign first team players, but you need a base of talented youngsters in order to push the club forward.

its not shortsighted at all, we see this every season mate, people talking about these youngsters who never break into the first team, usually end up on loan somewhere and then playing in the lower divisions for the rest of their careers, if he finds one talented player who will spend many good seasons with us i will be surprised, the youngsters are never given a chance here mate, or very few are given a chance to show what they can do, can anyone think of the last youth player who made the grade, probably gerrard 7 0r 8 years ago   ???

Rafa has only been here for 3 seasons, in those three seasons he has focussed much of his effort in getting the first team right. He has only recently been trying to scout out talent in Europe and the rest of the world.

I agree that over the past 7 or 8 years the talent hasn't come through, but Rafa has not been here for 4 of those seasons. Talent like Gerrard, Owen and Carragher don't come through very often, hence why we've been looking abroad. But the young players at every club form the foundation of the future. Who's to say Brouwer, Insua et al won't go on to be good players for us?

The youngsters will be given a chance in the cups, like they did in the carling cup run in 2005. If they succeed in impressing Rafa, then they will be given a chance in the league, probably in home games vs. the lesser opposition.

I think Rednapp might be the last youth player bought that went on to be a regular first teamer before Traore.
