Former Germany international Markus Babbel has said he will wind up his footballing career when his contract with Bundelsiga club Stuttgart comes to end this May.

"I will call time," the 34-year-old told the Bild newspaper. "I've always been an influential player in the game and I'm getting to the stage where I can't play that role."

Babel, who previously played for Hamburg, Bayern Munich and Liverpool, has only played two matches in the Bundesliga since the season's start.

The defender, who was part of the Germany team that won Euro-96 in England and won a total of 51 caps for the national side, his last coming in 2000, has targeted becoming a manager of a Bundesliga club after his retirement.

I was a big fan of Babbel when he was at Liverpool but he never was the same player after contracting that horrible illness.

  Good Luck Babbel lad.

Was great for us in the short time he was here, it was a cruel blow, both for him and the club that he contracted such a rare illness. He has done exceptionally well to recover and play on for a few seasons.

He was immense for us in the treble season, an absolute stand out. That illness was terrible and really hampered our back 4 under GH, especially as were so reliant on a strong back 4 at the time.

Another great servant to our club. Ich wünsche dir viel Glück Markus! :)

Hopefully he'll visit Anfield some time and he'll get the reception he deserves.

Although the illness ruined his career I'm glad he is in good health.

Deserves his place in LFC history.

Absolute class player.  Will always have a place in my heart, and Treble DVD!

Shows that GH made as many inspired buys as woefull ones.

Lets not go mad now, if you throw enough darts at a dartboard you'll hit the bullseye sometime.

Lets keep this thread to Babbel

He is a legend, great defender, good luck for him in the future! Hopefully he can be a legend manager himself.

Really was sad when he got this immune system illness! but he will remembered as one of Liverpool's greats.

Great player for Liverpool before his illness , but whilst not trying to sound disrespectful to the lad. He wasn't really a legend compared to some of the players we've had. Good luck anyway markus. :)
