updates of injuries and performances of our players during the latest round of qualifiers and friendlies:

AGGER: comfortable show against a spirited NI side. one minor blip but otherwise continues to impress. cool-cat this fella.

HYYPIA: again, a goalless encounter with Armenia saw little trouble for sami. was booked though.

CARRAGHER: unused sub for england.

CROUCH: performed well alongside a cart-horse struggling for form...until we play em at OT  took a bit of a battering but emerged OK.

GERRARD: had a reasonably good game and was unlucky with a trademark thunder-bolt late on. i thought he lacked a bit defensively. which is no surprise considering his 'chopping and changing' recently for both club and country. did well enough. unlucky to get 2nd yellow- not for Liverpool though!

RISSE: played 90 mins in 1:0 reverse home to greece.

GARCIA: got half an hour in spains 2:0 defeat. booked also.

ALONSO & REINA: unused subs.

FINNAN: whole 90 mins in dissapointing defeat in Nicosia. what can you say...at the moment its VITAL he stays fit.

BELLAMY: seems to have taken the whole world onto his shoulders at the moment. and quite obviously has other things preying on his mind outside football. i thought he worked extremely hard and was unlucky to come up against a decent shot-stopper having a good day on 2 or 3 occasions. didnt deserve to have a 5:1 reverse for his first game as stand-in skipper. but better for the experience?  he seems hard-faced enough to overcome it. he's going to have to.

KUYT: unfortunately turned an ankle fifteen minutes into the holland v bulgaria match and looks doubtful for Liverpool.

overall a fruitless day of mixed performances unwanted knocks and silly yellow cards. i cannot wait for all these games to be out the way, leaving a clear run for the premiership to finally get going.

Good news about the gerrard yellow as he will have a week to rest.

Well p!ssed off with the Kuyt injury, but as long as all the others come back fit and well i'll be happy. Feckin internationals.

international matches like this is a waste of time, rafa was right for having a huge squad but his tinkering was excessive at times.

F*cking International football should be banned mid-season.

If they must have sh*tty games like these - do it after the season has finished, play about 20 games in 2 weeks and f*ck off.

Problem solved. :D

A little bit of bitter sweet moment...

sweet - gerrard getting yellow carded (ie...so that he will be fresh for us against blackburn)

bitter - our best striker getting injured  .....why doesn't any manure or chelsea players get injured ???

Totally agree a waste of time these matches, especially when a player gets injured, does nothing to help the squad in the EPL.

Doubt he'll play mate sounds like more than just a knock and Rafa wont risk him unless fully fit B/burn is a game we must win lets hope Bellamy can do the business against his former club....

too right, its time these charlatans were made to pay up compo for cases like this - everytime, not just when it suits them or its reliant upon nationality etc   its an outrage if Kuyt plays on for Holland this week...he should be at Melwood getting looked after properly.

Rafa's blast over Kuyt Oct 9 2006

EXCLUSIVE By CHRIS BASCOMBE, Liverpool Echo

RAFAEL BENITEZ today (Monday) reacted furiously to Liverpool's latest injury scare due to an international break

The Reds boss is sweating on the fitness of striker Dirk Kuyt, who hurt his ankle playing for Holland on Saturday.

Kuyt will have a scan today under the supervision of Dutch medics, but Benitez is livid the player wasn't released from duty immediately after suffering the knock.

The Spanish boss sees the incident as the latest example of national federations ignoring the interests of the clubs.

He believes it's time for a radical rethink on the relationship between the parties.

"If Kuyt is a doubt for Wednesday, it means he is not fit," said Benitez.

"They were talking about seeing if he can play. If he plays, he may miss the next three or four games for Liverpool, including Blackburn, the Champions League and Manchester United.

"Our doctor spoke to the Dutch doctor yesterday and they said he would have a scan."

Benitez believes new rules should be enforced to prevent national coaches taking such risks with the players.

"When people talk about the national teams, no-one ever talks about the money they make, it's always about the pride of playing for your country," he said.

"If Kuyt misses many games and Crouch gets injured, it means we may not win as many games as we would. Last season we had a situation where Riise was injured in a friendly for Norway and missed the Champions League game with Benfica.

"Where was our compensation? The national associations should pay.

"I believe they should pay 50 per cent of a player's wage when they play for their country, and 100 per cent if they are injured, for as long as they can't play a competitive game.

"Spain are playing a friendly with Argentina on Wednesday? Why? Maybe it would be different if they had to pay 50 per cent of their salaries.

"As a manager, I would prefer to have Kuyt return fit than be compensated, but this is a big problem."

Benitez also believes the schedule could be easily altered.

"We will have two days to work with the players before the game on Saturday," he said.

"Instead of playing agame on Saturday and Wednesday, they should be playing Wednesday and then Saturday, so we still have a week to prepare."

who's next Crouch?  it makes no sense at all.
