Watching the Arsenal game yesterday I was reminded of how we knocked both Barcelona and Real Madrid out of the CL under Rafa. Some going that for any team, never mind one that was up for sale at the time because its owner (Moores) was skint.

Under Rafa in the Champions League we beat Real Madrid, Barcelona, Juventus, AC Milan, Inter Milan, Chelsea and Arsenal. Truly astonishing. In 2005 we beat the best 3 teams in the world at the time in the quarters, semis and the final.

Anyway, can't believe that Real Madrid didn't hang onto Alonso. Kross is a good player but there isn't really another Alonso out there. He's the best in the his role.

Under Rafa we were any oppositions nightmare in Europe. Played some awesome football. My fav game apart from 05 final has to be the battering we gave Real madrid.

And how some fans turned on him. I remember some idiot here claiming that if we swapped Rafa for Martin O'Niel then we would have won the league. Idiots were following idiots in those days :glare:

What's more by all accounts David Silva and Dani Alves were practically done deals as well, Rafa had convinced them to sign but the plug was pulled upstairs on the finance.
Imagine, for the sake of £30m-£40m we could have had a team like this -

                                        Reina

       Alves.          Carragher.      Hyypia.          Arbeloa

                           Alonso.           Mascherano

                 Kuyt.             Gerrard.              Silva

                                       Torres

what might have been eh?
