We lost him because Rafa thought Gareth Barry was better. Doesnt that give you a nice warm feeling inside....

We lost him because R Madrid bid 30 mil for a player who was offered for 14 mil 12 months early .

No matter what happened between Rafa and Xabi , he would of gone regardless when Madrid offered that amount of money .

dont agree - its obvious the guy loved Liverpool, he went because he wasnt wanted anymore!

he left because he didn't feel wanted. He was told he was one of those who COULD be sold to fund new transfers - he said that himself. That made him not feel wanted anymore

Let's not enter that debate, we are where we are now

Xabi is a Red :)

b*llox, he said it himself in the interview that everything changed when the Gareth Barry saga happened, I don't blame him

I think it was Rafa's biggest mistake.  But people must remember that Rafa said he wanted to keep Alonso and sign Barry.  We didn't have the money for that and Rafa had a tough call to make based on Alonso's form at the time.

Both legends though and we should focus on all the good times instead.

He is also said back in 2007 that one day he wished to return to Spain .

No matter what happened with Rafa - Xabi would of left because

A. The owners wouldn't of turned down 30mil in a million years

And

B. It was the biggest club in his home country .

If R Madrid hadn't bid for him then he wouldn't of left .

Xabi left and managed to double his wages as well as returning to his home country .

If he was that heartbroken and desperate to leave why didn't ask to leave ?

He only left when Madrid came sniffing .

Xabi didn't say he is going to be sold to fund a transfer for Gareth Barry

Xabi's words were he was told he COULD (I emphasise could) be one of the players sold to bring in new players

That's what I meant Greavsie, he said that things changed in the summer before he left and his heart was set on leaving
