To quote John Lennon, "Imagine" ...... The scenario is slightly different, Liverpool football club has an accomplished owner. Who had the Gold to drag the club into the twenty-first century, by presenting the fans and the club with a present day stadium. The move from the traditional Sanctuary that has witnessed some of the greatest footballing moments in History. Churns up mixed emotions for the clubs faithful following, memorable nights etched into the memories of all who stood before and witnessed some truly joyous moments that very few words can describe. The supporters and the board of this club realise that to compete in todays global market of football. The club needs to market itself, expand and produce a new-fashioned, bigger stadium as is the demand of twenty-first century football.
Meanwhile as the excitement of a new era ponders the minds of Liverpools fans with a brand new and much needed stadium thats just four months away in waiting. An even a more exciting event is taking shape on the field of play. Its May the 24th 2009 Liverpool football club has found itself in such an exhilarating position again amongst footballs finest.
Its the last day of a very tough campaign, all Liverpool need is to take three points from Tottenham Hotspur no matter the results elsewhere. If they do they'll claim the elusive number ninteen that has been so evasive for the fans and club alike and for curiously enough, ninteen years. The time on the clock reads 17.31, with Spring in the air and Summer on the horizon. The Sun shines down on the Anfield turf, although peaceful in picture, the atmosphere felt couldnt be further than depicted. The anxious feeling that runs around the crowd can be felt from radio listeners far away. The tension is sickening the pressure is felt, all the Reds need, are three points to claim their holy grail. A stubborn Spurs defence is holding on as the teams are deadlocked and the pressure is mounting.
Liverpool are playing with their hearts, the manager animated on the sideline urging his players on. The crowd suddenly belt out 'The fields of Anfield road' to rouse their stars on. Liverpool pick up the pace and inject some of the devastating football thats been on show throughout the season. Suddenly on radio's around the country you hear the commentator say ....
" Carragher, plays the ball to Alonso, Alonso turns, looks wide the option is on. He picks out Riera on the left, a challenge comes in from Huddlestone. Riera still in possesion looses Huddlestone, runs down the sideline. Checks inside, lays it off to Gerrard whos' free outside the box. Gerrard shimmeys past his man and has a shot ....... GGGOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAALLLLL !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! "
The commentator is mesmorised as are the delirious supporters who are bursting blood vessels in sheer delight and excitement, they are compelling Anfield to a deafening roar. People up and down the Country and Countries afar bare witness to this remarkable instant, and join as one to celebrate the long awaited return of the league title !
Yet again for its final encore Anfield has witnessed something that words cannot describe. Pandemonium is released as the Sun basks down, and the fans burst out a spine tingling rendition of 'You'll never walk alone' as they bare witness to another great achievement in Liverpool football clubs history.
What a way to say goodbye and bid farewell to Anfield.
