The Results Comparison - 2006-07 versus 2007-08

In order to place a little more clarity on the subject of results, and possibly help in guageing where we are and how well we are doing I am going to take a look after all our league games of this season in comparrison with last season.

Obviously three of the teams will have changed, so in an attempt to paper over this crack, I will substitute as follows:

Derby, as the apparent whipping boys will be compared with the results of Watford from last season who finished bottom.

Sunderland I will compare with the results of Sheffield United. Sunderland I think might just stay up, however as Sheffield United (rightly or wrongly) where only just relegated I will use them.

Finally I will compare the results of this seasons other new boys, Birmingham with the results of Charlton.

I am going to do both the comparisson for game versus game from last season, as well as the coparrison for this many games in.

I will update the second post in this thread as the league games go on.

Feel free to post any thoughts or comments or suggestions.

Conclusion - 2 points dropped from last season against the same team, although we all know that Rob Styles was the only reason Chelsea salvaged the draw, and points are the same as after our second game of last season.

Overall at this stage of last season we where on 4 points, and thats the same here, but we have dropped 2 points to Chelsea, we will need to get them back at Stamford Bridge by bettering our 0-1 loss there last term.

No point atall compairing past seasons results, I dont know what clarity it brings TBH.

Its just a pointless stat.

The point is we need to improve on last season and it gauges how we are doing compared to last season. We lost away to Pompey last season and drew at Villa last season, this season we drew and won so we've picked up three points more than we did in those games last season.

Conclusion to be drawn, we're doing better or have improved therefore we're not doing well simply because we have had easy games (otherwise the results would be the same and would just be played in a different order)

We can't pick up more points in games we won last season so we have to look at those we lost or drew such as Man Utd, Chelsea, Arsenal, Bolton, PORTSMOUTH, Newcastle, Everton and Blackburn away. Even if we only pick up seven to ten points from those games it will be more than we managed in those games last season therefore ten points better off. As long as we don't then drop points in games we won last season we will finish with more points.

I would have thought the reason for comparing this season's results with last was pretty obvious - or perhaps you just don't like stats

They just dont like to have to admit that they over reacted to results I reckon. (see the game thread for more info).

It's all to do with expectations this season leon. With the new players we have bringing a better quailty depth to the squad . People including myself expect us to put a better performance in against the likes of portsmouth. This has nothing to do with rotation as far as i'm concerned,we should be getting 3 pts from pompey with the quality of squad we have.

The majority of us (including the manager and players) feel that this season represents our best oppotunity for a while at giving it a real crack at the league. The european cup would be nice of course ,but it's the league we all want would you agree. Whilst accepting of course this is not the end of the world , it does feel like an oppotunity lost to make a statement to the others.

I would rather rafa rested players in the cup comps and play our strongest players where possible in the league. That would obviously give us a fare crack at the league imo.

it is a pointless stat mate, our squad has changed as has the team we are playing against, different weather, different circumstances, international games, europe next week, injuries etc etc etc. its like if we draw real madrid in the champions league and someone says 'well we beat them in the final', yeah but that was in 1981, no relevance just like our result at pompey last season has no relevance on the result this season, it is no barometer as to whether we have improved or not

Agreed, but IT IS an undeniable fact that we have made a much better start to last season (regardless of the opposition) and hopefully we have set the foundation for a title challenge.

you can never have too many stats on anything. the more stats you have, the more information, ergo the better understanding you will get

I dont think its pointless at all, yes we have a better squad..therefore should pick up better results.
But i am always looking at how we did last season to how we have done so far this season. Helps you see how far we have progressed, and its actually quite interesting.

I don't necessarily agree that it's "pointless", but I can see where Peewee is coming from on this. If you were to play Reading for instance right now, you'd be playing an outfit who are a different proposition to last season, similarly Man City. As the season progresses, the comparisons will be thrown further out of whack as we largely gave up on the league last season once it became clear that a) we obviously weren't going to win it, b) we were looking good for a Champions League spot for next/this season, and c) we had a realsitic chance of winning the Champions League (last season)).

The main comparison of course is not necessarily game by game but overall, and in a more competitive league this term (in that the top teams with the exception of us probably aren't as good, and the middle teams are a bit stronger) we are probably going to need to find an additional 15-18 points to go extremely close. I think we can and will, as I've long said, if we give ourselves a chance I think we'll win it. We have the team, and the squad if you want to get clever to end the drought.

why is it spam leon, you really are starting to annoy mate with your attitude.

what is it now, we have to agree with you unless you say its spamming. its a forum, you post one opinion and i posted another, i could easily turn around and say your post is spam as it bears no relevance on what is happening this season. i gave my reasosn why i think the stats are pointless, thats hardly spamming, its called debate.

so leon please dont spam the forum with pointless stats

(see it can work both ways)

what is it now, we have to agree with you unless you say its spamming. its a forum, you post one opinion and i posted another, i could easily turn around and say your post is spam as it bears no relevance on what is happening this season. i gave my reasosn why i think the stats are pointless, thats hardly spamming, its called debate.

so leon please dont spam the forum with pointless stats

(see it can work both ways)

I will not get into your silly little arguments mate.

Act your age will you.

I explained the reason I think its pointless posting your stuff in here.

I will do it again:

I dont like tennis. I dont like to watch it or play it.

This in mind, I dont post on any tennis forums, and any started on here I dont read or post in.

I dont see the point in telling people who talk about it that it is rubbish.
