It may have been a frustrating night at Anfield but Pepe Reina had good reason to celebrate after Liverpool's goalless draw with Portsmouth on Wednesday.
The clean-sheet Reina kept against Pompey was his 26th in 48 League games for the Reds, meaning he has set a new club goalkeeping record.
No previous Liverpool keeper has registered more shut-outs in their first 50 full matches.

Last season the Spanish stopper kept a club record 11 successive clean sheets between October 29 and December 15.

Clean Sheets and goals conceded by Liverpool goalkeepers in their first 50 (full) League games

Jose Reina* - Clean Sheets: 26, Goals Conceded: 36
Ray Clemence - Clean Sheets: 25, Goals Conceded: 33
Bruce Grobbelaar - Clean Sheets: 25, Goals Conceded: 39
Jerzy Dudek - Clean Sheets: 25, Goals Conceded: 41
Harry Storer - Clean Sheets: 18, Goals Conceded: 57
Ted Doig - Clean Sheets: 18, Goals Conceded: 62
Sander Westerveld - Clean Sheets: 17, Goals Conceded: 50
Mike Hooper - Clean Sheets: 17, Goals Conceded: 59
Sam Hardy - Clean Sheets: 15, Goals Conceded: 56
Cyril Sidlow - Clean Sheets: 15, Goals Conceded: 58
David James - Clean Sheets: 14, Goals Conceded: 59
Tommy Lawrence - Clean Sheets: 14, Goals Conceded: 60
Bill Perkins - Clean Sheets: 14, Goals Conceded: 67

Bert Slater - Clean Sheets: 13, Goals Conceded: 71
Tommy Younger - Clean Sheets: 12, Goals Conceded: 67
Doug Rudham - Clean Sheets: 10, Goals Conceded: 88
Kenny Campbell - Clean Sheets: 10, Goals Conceded: 91
Russell Crossley - Clean Sheets: 8, Goals Conceded: 87
Arthur Riley - Clean Sheets: 8, Goals Conceded: 95

(Criteria: 'Keepers have to play the full game for the clean sheet to be awarded. However, if injured, substituted or sent-off having conceded during that game the appearance counts.)

*Reina has played only 48 games

Well that's just shut all the dickheads up.

Don't ever let me hear any of you say "The table/stats don't lie" again if you bitch about Pepe.

And all this utter b*llocks about it being soley down to the defence is pathetic.

Didn't Alan Hansen and Mark Lawrenson play for us then? WHat about the other top, top defenders we've had?

Our current defence isn't as good as some of our past ones.

You've got to understand, lad...there was a very long, very acrimonious thread about Pepe started earlier this season, where the whole debate about how much the defense contributed to his cleansheet stats was done to death.  Not singling you out in particular, mate, but it's a constant source of irritation around here when newbies join and start new threads on topics that have been discussed recently.  The safe bet is to hunt around the back pages a bit first to see if there's a thread on the topic already out there and then add the new information to that. :)

Fine, let's do this one all over again...

Yes, Pepe is that good.  Our defense is strong but you don't break records like that without a strong keeper.  He will prove his doubters wrong.  Happy?

Ive felt a lot more confident about Pepe over the last few games, he looks like hes getting back to his best,

Im still not fully convinced by him, but he is still young and may yet turn out to be one of our best,
for me, hes got all the ability to be great, its having the confidence in himself when things go wrong that he needs to work on.
