Bill Shankly has once again topped a national poll to find out the greatest football manager of all time. The result of the TEAMtalk poll, published in August 2001, put Shanks on top of the pile, ahead of Sir Alex Ferguson, Bob Paisley and, well, everyone !
The poll result, which interestingly enough was published just days before Ferguson lost a 4th consecutive Charity Shield ( a feat unlikely ever to be matched ), continued a long running theme which has seen Shanks consistently nominated as best ever manager, over a quarter of a century after he last led out a team in anger.
The TEAMtalk poll ran for a fortnight and received over 25,000 votes. Shankly received an impressive 7,869 votes, beating current Manchester United chief Ferguson (7,330) by over 300 votes.
Fittingly, the great Bob Paisley came a close third with 7,267 votes - the only other manager to poll over 1,000 was Giovanni Trappatoni, whose 1,229 placed him fourth.

Purely because in my lifetime, he was the best thing about Liverpool right up until he left, from which arguably we have never recovered.
The first game I really took an interest in was the 1986 FA Cup Final against Everton when he was one of the best players on the pitch at 35 years old, and that was when both teams were in the top five in Europe at that time. He was manager, therefore a hero to the young jonnymac.
I had the good fortune to have a season ticket when we won the league in 1988, when he was manager and we were just awesome.
Kenny will always be a Liverpool hero, let Blackburn and Newcastle be stricken from the records.
Okay, Blackburn I will let off, due to that magnificent last game of the 1995 season.

Posted: Sat Feb 21, 2004 10:26 amTough call for top manager between Shanks and Paisley,but I went for Bob purely for the bigger trophy haul and his teams gave me many magic moments all over the world.
Posted: Tue Feb 24, 2004 1:42 pmIt's got to be Paisley for me. You could argue that Shanks laid the foundation, he is undoubtedly a God to all Pool fans the world over, Paisley however delivered the big prizes and made us a world great.

Paisley inherited a brilliant side but must be heralded for his ability to maintain the status quo (for an example of not being able to do this look at Souness) and while Man Utd were at a reasonably low point when Ferguison took over they were still a top 6 or 7 side in the top division (kind of like ourselves at the moment...)
When Shanks took over Liverpool they were facing into a relegation battle to the old third division.
The man was a genius.
