Highly doubt that. If anything it's probably an abnormality that has till now remained dormant.

I believe it's a distinct possibility that you can overwork your heart muscle through cardiovascular exercise.

These footballers will be medically examined to the hilt on a regular basis, what's the chances of a heart problem going unnoticed? Also heart problems in football seem to be becoming more and more frequent.

Maybe the pace of the game affects some footballers heart muscle more than others? Who knows.

I'm with tubby, unlikely.

Your argument falls over regardless. Even if it was down to over-exercise, the heart would not keel over without some indication that it was struggling in previous medical examinations. Additionally if over-exercise could cause this, statistically you would see this not only happen more in football but every sport. How many marathon runners have heart attacks mid-race?

To me it has to be a very obscure anomaly that is hard to pick up with routine examination.

In fact I would not be surprised if clubs are not actually doing a fully comprehensive exam on their players.

The risk of a cardiac incident increases in people who do sport and who have an underlying condition -- that usually means there is something abnormal with the physiology of the heart. It doesn't mean that that risk increases when doing sport or exercise if you have a healthy heart; in fact, the opposite is true, because of the cardiovascular benefits brought by regular exercise. The problem is that identifying an underlying condition isn't always straightforward and that's because some conditions are hard to detect and because the screening methods rely on human judgment (interpreting a graph of the electrical activity of your heart, for example). Nevertheless, it's still worthwhile getting checked over by a doctor if you take regular physical exercise, particularly if you've a family history of heart problems. It doesn't take long and it's completely non-invasive.

Where've you heard this StMick? Not seen this reported but if he is talking it's a fantastic improvement.

Just the news of him showing movement in his limbs is brilliant, but if he's talking as well then hopefully the chances of a full recovery are looking better and better.

there was an excellent article in the guardian yesterday that explains how many top athletes are in danger of suffering attacks like muamba did http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2012/mar/18/heart-disorder-hocum-fabrice-muamba

the modern sportsman is operating at high intensity at the very limit of what the human body is capable of. the slightest defect that would normally be undetected can cause a serious problem at any moment.

Yea. I also heard he was speaking a little in both French and English and even identified some of the people there to visit him. Excellent news if true and I really hope he didnt suffer any long lasting brain damage as a result. Its a long way back but the support and prayers of pretty much everyone in sports have been nothing short of fantastic. Hes a fighter and I really hope he makes a full and speedy recovery from this.

That's a great article mate and as I've said sometimes the scanning doesn't pick out those small defects and the human body is very unpredictable to all sorts of things.

good to see he's doing better. Tweeted a picture of himself today.

Very sad to hear about Petrov though, he has been diagnosed with acute leukaemia. Hope he makes a quick recovery from that. Terrible that this would happen to young and fit athletes.

Great to see lad improving and saw that about Petrov as well.
Hopefully being young and fit and with an early diagnosis that story will also have a happy ending

Best of luck to him

terrible that it happens to anyone...not just young fit athletes

I remember not so long ago how the media potrayed Liverpool as self pity city because we dared to show feelings for 96 people dying at a football match....the media coverage over the past 2 weeks for muamba was a tad over indulgent to be fair.....as a relative of a patient you don't seem to be getting such a regular update never mind the quality and intensity of the care

now home and fitted with a pacemaker. Still a long way to go for the lad, and can't see him playing again, but a testiment to the medical professionals who treated him.  Hope he gets well and stays involved with the game in some way

Good news. His football career is over but I think the club said they'll look after him and hopefully he was well insured.

he's announced his retirement following medical advice. at just 24 years of age, the poor bugger. he was a decent player and seems like a decent bloke as well. hope life comes up with something good for him.
