Liverpool could be set to make one final signing this summer as they remain in the hunt for Barcelona and former Arsenal midfielder Alex Song, according to Mundo Deportivo.

The Reds have been in the market for new signings in midfield for some time now, and are thought to be making some progress in their efforts to land Song on a season-long loan deal from the Catalan giants.

The Cameroon international has had a difficult time since making the move to the Nou Camp from the Emirates Stadium, finding himself mostly among the substitutes on a regular basis due to some intense competition for places in the squad.

Still, Song had been a key player for Arsenal during his time with the club, and established himself as one of the Premier League's top midfielders in his final season with the club in 2011-12.

Despite not enjoying a great deal of first-team action in the last couple of years, Song remains an experienced player who could offer something to this Liverpool squad.

Barcelona are hoping to bring in £10m from Song's sale, though Liverpool are keen to have him on loan for a season first.

If we could pull this off it would be a great signing. At Arsenal he always impressed me, Arsenal fans hated it when they lost him to Barcelona.

He has all the credentials we need. Strong, powerful DM. Already proved he can cut it in the PL. Miles better than Lucas.

I like Song, and he is good at screening the back four too.

Alonso to Bayern confirmed. Would have been a no brainer to bring him back here on a 2 year deal to replace Lucas. Bayern are paying him £150k a week though.

River Plate have told Eder Balanta suitors to cough up £4.3m for their prized asset.

The 21-year-old has been constantly linked with a high-profile move this summer after putting in a number of impressive performances for Colombia at the World Cup.

Liverpool have been keeping tabs on the centre-half, who also doubles up as a left-back, with European heavyweights Juventus and Barcelona also interested.

The Anfield outfit are understood to be keen on taking advantage of Balanta's cut-price deal - with River Plate initially seeking £6m.

And club president Rodolfo D'Onofrio has told clubs to pay an upfront fee of £4.3m if they want to secure his services.

"We have almost 80 per cent of his registration," D'Onofrio said. "We value that at €5.5m (£4.3m) and the most important thing is that we want the money as quickly as possible.

"Clubs instead want to pay a small amount now - for a loan - and then talk about it in a year. This is not possible."

I agree, what the first couple of games have shown is that the DM role is a problem for us, BR should push this through.

He isn't a Lucas replacement in any way.

Since when did he perform a DM role that protected the back four and broke up attacks?

Never.

He was the pass master who dictated tempo. Bringing him in now would only negate the need for Gerrard.

Song is a good player although I don't think he is particularly good defensively. Has an eye for a pass but if he does comes, would want to see more defensive discipline from him

But at his age, for how long? We need someone younger! I would say he is less of a player than he as for us in his final year. His 5 million asking price illustrates this. Short term fix at best!

LMFAO @ this from Metro  :no

Arsenal and Liverpool are still pushing hard to sign Marco Reus despite Borussia Dortmund insisting he will stay put.

Reus, who has refused to sign a new contract at Dortmund, is subject of intense speculation at present with his buyout clause set to drop below £20million next summer.

And while Dortmund insist they expect the player to stay with them, the Daily Express reports that Arsenal and Liverpool are still battling it out to sign the 25-year-old.

The newspaper says both clubs are keen on bagging Reus and while Arsenal have already held talks about a deal, Liverpool remain desperate to bring him in.

Any deal is complicated by interest from Real Madrid, with some suggestions that they're keen on bagging him for a cut price, with Dortmund still owing them cash from the Nuri Sahin deal.

All the interested parties are prepared to go outside of the forthcoming transfer deadline to get the player, with a January deal on the cards.

I would have Song, he's better than both Lucas and Allen. He was pretty good back with Arsenal, but it would be nice if we could pull off a loan deal first to see if he still has it.
