He should be here in some capacity, like teaching our defenders how to actually defend

By the looks of Gerrard this lad could have a big role to play for us this season.

This lad is seriously going to be surprise a few. We won't be bullied on the pitch with his lad and Henderson.

brendan says he'll bring courage and charisma. that'll do for me. gerrard and hendo can do all the football stuff while can thumps his chest and tells knock knock jokes with one eyebrow raised.

Liverpool have snapped up German midfielder Emre Can after finalising a £10million deal with Bayer Leverkusen.

The 20-year-old has impressed this season and fits the mould of the type of upgrade Brendan Rodgers is wanting to make to his squad this summer.

But how much do you know about him?

Here's our comprehensive guide to the newest Red.

Who is he?
Can was born in Frankfurt and began his footballing career with minnows SV Blau-Gelb Frankfurt.

After six years he joined Eintracht Frankfurt before making the move to the youth ranks of Bavarian giants Bayern Munich.

After only four first team appearances for Bayern he made the switch to Bayer Leverkusen last summer.

Where's he from?
He has represented Germany at U15, U16 and U17 level but, because of his Turkish ancestry, is eligible to play for their national team.

However, Can has stated on numerous occasions he sees himself as German and "likes playing for Germany very much, and wants to make it in the DFB".

Why did Bayern get rid of him?
It wasn't for lack of talent that's for sure.

Can displayed a lot of promise in his early career with Bayern II, but such is the competition at the Allianz Arena, they deemed him surplus to requirements and moved him on.

Not before they inserted a fixed-price return clause in his contract though. More on that later...

Where does he play?
Can is a versatile operator who has proven adept in a number of positions while with Bayer.

As well as his favoured central midfield role the 20-year-old has been deployed at the back at times both centrally and in both full-back positions.

Who does he play like?
Clive Rose
A Bastian of hope: Emre Can could go on to be as accomplished as Schweinsteiger

He is a thoroughly modern midfielder, technically sound with two good feet, who is not content with simply getting and giving it.

In the mould of a Bastian Schweinsteiger - albeit not yet as polished - Can also gets forward when the need arises netting three times in the Bundesliga last season.

Where would he fit in at Anfield?
Can will likely compete with Jordan Henderson, Lucas Leiva and Joe Allen for a spot alongside skipper Steven Gerrard in the middle at Anfield.

That said, both in age and positional terms, Can is perhaps a better fit as Gerrard's long-term replacement in the deep-lying playmaker role.

What are the details of his Liverpool deal?
Can has joined on a £10million deal after meeting the youngster's release clause.

The Reds have moved quick to snap up the 20-year-old this summer and that may have a great deal to do with Rodgers' relationship with Can's agent who facilitated the Nuri Sahin and Samid Yesil deals.

This lad was one of the few positives to take out of yesterday's game, he's not the quickest in terms of acceleration but once he gets into his stride he's deceptively fast, he made a couple of long runs down the line and left Roma players in his wake. For a big strong lad he's got quite a bit of skill too, Coutinho would have been proud of some of his flicks and tricks.
He's good now even at 20 but in a few years time this lad is going to be some player for us.

I agree mate ,I said something similar about his performance in the match thread ,genuinely believe we've acquired a player there. I think clubs are going to be kicking themselves at not picking him up when he was available .

Emre played center back for Germany u21's last night in their 2 nil win against ROI, by all accounts he played really well

Center back, left back, central midfield.. he seems very versatile, obviously very young and very powerful, could have a big future with us
