Welcome Simon. Bring the form he was in in Sunderland and we'll have a fantastic keeper.

I think we had to sign a keeper who could step into the first team straight away if we couldn't be sure Reina was staying at the club. You don't risk going into the start of a new season without a first choice goalie. I think it deals the problem nice and early, before any late bids or last minute grumblings from Reina could cause us any problems. If Reina stays, then we have some ridiculous competition there and it gives Mignolet a chance to learn directly from one of the best in the business.

As for Mignolet himself, it's a major step up from Sunderland and he's still very young for a goalie but having played a big part in keeping them up, he's no stranger to performing (well) under pressure either. I think he's one of the best shot stoppers in the league and probably suits our system a bit better than someone like Begovic because of his agility, though I can understand the reservations people have about his ability to deal with high balls. You've got to remember he's only 24 and he'll go on to develop both physically and as a player. As he does, he'll get better in those departments and eventually, hopefully, fully justify the manager's faith in his ability.

As an aside, good to see the club conducting its business early. We're clearly learning from last summer's last minute debacle involving Dempsey and Carroll.

Mignolet is genuine quality ,so it should be an interesting pre season with two brilliant keepers vying for that spot between the sticks

If Pepe does go then its a sensible signing - good gk

But if Pepe doesn't go then its a lot of money to sit in the bench

to be fair, we've paid £6m in the past for a 2nd choice goalkeeper in chris kirkland.

We did and he was a youngster who arrived with Dudek to fight out for the No1 spot as opposed to arriving whilst we have a no1.

True, but if you can't be sure whether Reina's staying or going you have a decision to make. Do you let another club take Mignolet, wait it out, discover you've got bids for Reina and that he wants out and then sign a keeper? Then it's going to cost more because time's short and clubs know you're desperate for their keeper and they need a replacement themselves; and your first choice is already taken. It also depends on how good Mignolet is -- too good to miss out on now? -- and how much money there is to strengthen defence etc. I think all of that has to taken into account before you decide whether it's a wise signing or not.

Most people will see this logic LFC2007, some won't see the end of their nose because it's just the way they are - just a fecking black dog!

What do you make of him John? (as a keeper) can't say I've seen him (I only watch 'Pool).
