Players that turned out to be flops

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

We've signed many many players down the years.

Name players who had potential but turned out to be flops.
Not your normal average joes im on about players who had a good background and were quite successful in their previous clubs.
You can also name young players who we fought off a lot of competition.
Hot prospect players etc....

There many to name one that stands out for me is Aquilani.
Injury plagued player a terrible buy.

Morientes !

When we signed him (aged 29 ?) he was perhaps just a tad past his peak but was still acknowledged as "world class" . He had his moments during his 18 months with us but given his (deserved) reputation I was hugely disappointed , probably on a par with how Chelsea fans must of felt about how Torres performed for them   :D

Also have to give a nod to Robbie Keane and Charlie Adam. Given their proven pedigree prior to joining us both imo were massive flops at LFC.

Having said all of that your pick of Aquilani is hard to beat   :D

Have you guys forgotten Harry Kewell?

One of the best players in the league at Leeds. His injury record is worse than Sturridge at Liverpool. He did play a very significant part in our 2005 Champions League. By getting injured and making way for Hamann to come in, thereby correcting Rafa's initial line-up mistake...

I suppose Alun Evans would be the famous one, Shankly paid Wolves a record fee for him in 1968 when he was still a teenager.
He stood out because of his blonde mop top Beatle haircut but his career was dogged by injury and bad luck (he was infamously glassed in a nightclub). He did have talent though, Shankly bought him after he ripped us to shreds and he did score a hat trick in a UEFA Cup game against that great Bayern Munich side of the 70's.
He lost his place to Kevin Keegan though who turned out to be the player we all though Evans was going to be, despite costing 4 times less than Evans.

Paul Stewart and Karl Heinz-Reidle immediately sprung to mind for some reason but theres been loads over the years.

Jimmy Carter under Dalglish flopped and never got his career on track after that, and Anelka was a big disappointment.

Christian Ziege and Sinama Pongolle lot of flops under Houllier, including the catastrophe that was Diouf.

Robbie Keane  :Oo:

I thought getting rid of Annelka was one of Houlliers biggest mistakes mate, we finished second (above Man U) when we had that front 3 of Owen, Heskey and Annelka. Annelka arrived in the January and our record for the last 15 games of the season was P15 W13 D1 L1. He didn't score that many because he played as a wide forward but the 3 of them just clicked.
That summer I was really looking forward to the following season but Houllier decided against signing Annelka on a permanent deal and went for El Hadji Diouf instead, it was all downhill from there, we never looked anywhere as good under Houllier again.

Yup bad error from Houllier not keeping Anelka.

Another one who i feel flopped was Ryan Babel. Alot of promise but never really delivered.

Karl Heinz Reidle was not that bad mate. He didn't however live up to his expectations though when compared to his previous records. I think he only scored half with us compared to his other clubs.

We had a little more than our fair share over the years.
Voronin the pornstar who looked like a footballer.
Le tallec and Cheyrou.
Konchesky.
Poulsen.
Jovanovic.
Diao.
Nunez.
The big erik lad.
Torben Picknik and the Kvarme lad.

All true shockers in the red  :nod

Lazar Markovic has to be the worst in recent memory. Although, incredibly, I've heard that there are some clubs interested in signing him for £13m. Given the loan fees (which total to £3m) we might actually get our money back

Aquilani was another...along with Balotelli and Carroll.

Those guys in the tight shorts have bigger balls than Markovic.

Mind you, that's not saying much. I've seen stick insects with bigger gonads that Lazar  :D

Plenty of awful buys.

Kewell the biggest disappointment for me. Thought he was a class player for Leeds and always hoped we'd sign him. Injuries ruined him.

Morientes, Benteke and Aquilani are the other ones that spring to mind.

Never thought Joe Cole would be as bad as he was and I also expected Ziege to do much better.

Diouf is out on his own as the least likeable LFC player ever. Unforgiveable signing him over Anelka.
