Best Player Ever

International Football/Football World Wide - General Discussion

So I remember a while ago how many people on here were saying that Pele is the best player ever because of the amount of goals he's scored, the world cups he's won, and how he's contributed to his teams.  He's said many times that nobody can be considered better than him until they match his record of over 1200 goals.  This very well may be the case. Personally I feel Messi is the best player to ever play.

Here's a little article somebody showed to me that I found quite funny, and really shows how Pele tries to manipulate his "career."

Pele comes across as a bit of a knob, yeah he was world class, and also played with a lot of good players. At times he wasn't even the best in the Brazilian side, Garrincha anyone? Pele was the poster boy, and a lot of his greatness comes from playing so long, and being Brazilian.  Messi's consistency, at the highest level of football, Europe, is breathtaking. He is so good that we are starting to take his play for granted. Sometimes, we're told by the commentators that he is having a poor/quiet game, but if any other player was playing that 'badly' they'd fawn all over him.

But, on their best day, playing at their peak, I would say that Maradona was the greatest; arrogant tough little fcker, took ***** sides to greatness.

I always think its very difficult trying to compare players from different eras especially as game has changed so much.

(not too mention what defenders could get away with as well)

I dont think you rate Messi with that title while he still playing. Certainly be end of his career if he keeps going in this vein,  he probably will overshadow many if not all legends of the past

I'm not old enough to have watched Cruyff, Maradona, Pele & Puskas, so I can't say "Yes, Pele is the best", or "I think Maradona is the best".

The best player I've seen in my life time at club level anyway would have to be Messi. I watched him destroy Leverkusen in the Champions League and rather than being impressed, I was disgusted by just how fantastic one player could be. He's a one man army at times, it's unbelievable.

At International level, the best footballer I've seen is Miroslav Klose by a country mile. He's still an integral part of the German International team and he's nearing his mid-30's.

Blimey you are being serious

340 games he has played and scored 260 goals !!! over a 100 assists

He has scored 60 goals alone this season.

Countless hat tricks.

Hundreds of indivdual goals.

RVP is nowhere near the ability of Messi

RVP is a very good footballer, but Messi is a great footballer, that's the difference between them.

Wow. Mate, you must be dangling your hook here. I know these things are subjective but that's just wrong.

read the thread title and thought of Messi. May be premature though, it'll be interesting to see how he gets on next season with a new manager and after Xavi retires. Still a few blocks in Messi's path and I'm looking forward to how he deals with them
